Laundry Care Symbols Guide


Laundry  label Somewhere on almost every item made of fabric , there is a label displaying pictograms. These symbols are there to show you the best way to handle the laundry process for that particular item. Laundry symbols, also known as Care symbols vary in different regions of the world. In this section we concentrate on those used in the UK and Europe. There are five different types of symbol used. The basic shapes are shown below, but each symbol has a different version depending on the laundry process required for that particular item.

The list below contains the most common symbols found, along with a brief discription of their meaning.

Wash Symbols

Laundry Care Symbol This symbol means the item is machine washable.

Laundry Care Symbol The number in the center is the maximum temperature at which the item should be washed. (the number may be higher or lower than 40°c.)

Laundry Care Symbol 1 bar below -Garment can be washedon asynthetic cycle.

Laundry Care Symbol 2 bars below - Item requires delicate wash cycle, wash as wool.

Laundry Care Symbol Hand Washed at a warm temperature.

Laundry Care Symbol This symbol indicates that the item should Not be washed with water. (may require Dry-cleaning)

Bleach Symbols

Laundry Care Symbol This symbol shows that the use of bleach in the wash is acceptable.

Laundry Care Symbol The use of chlorine bleach is acceptable

Laundry Care Symbol DO NOT use bleach ongarments displaying this symbol.

Drying Symbols

Laundry Care Symbol Items showing this symbol can be tumble dryed.

Laundry Care Symbol Tumble dry on a Lowheat settingonly.

Laundry Care Symbol Tumble dry on a Medium heat setting only.

Laundry Care Symbol DO NOT tumble dry items with this symbol.

Laundry Care Symbol It Is recommended that you Drip dry items with this symbol.

Laundry Care Symbol Item requires Line drying / Hanging.

Laundry Care Symbol Lay items with this symbol flat to dry.

Ironing Symbols

Laundry Care Symbol 1 dot - Cool Iron. (upto 110°c) - Generally used for acrylics, acetates and nylons.

Laundry Care Symbol 2 dots - Warm Iron. (upto 150°c) - Generally used for polyester mixes, and wool.

Laundry Care Symbol 3 dots - Hot Iron. (upto 200°c) - Generally used for linens and cottons.

Dry-Cleaning Symbols

Laundry Care Symbol This symbol means the item is suitable for Dry-Cleaning.

Laundry Care Symbol The letterA indicates any solventmay be used during the dry-cleaning process.

Laundry Care Symbol The letter F indicates that solvents R113 & Hydrocarbon should be used.

Laundry Care Symbol The letter P indicates that any solvent except trichloroethylenemay be used.
